After a thorough exam and a proper prescription has been determined, there
are many options in frames, as well as lens materials and special coatings.
Helping you decide what is best for you is important to us. Lenses The first step in selecting a new pair of glasses is choosing
the optimum lens material, lens design and treatment
options. We are here to help guide you through the maze
of products and recommend those that best
fit your prescription and lifestyle.
Lens Material
Polycarbonate - Lenses made of this material are the most impact resistant available. The are lighter than conventional plastic lenses and absorb harmful UV radiation. Polycarbonate lenses come in a very wide variety of designs. These lenses are always the first choice of lens material because of their weight and safety.
High Index - Lenses made of special high index
material are light in weight
and thinner. These material are best suited for stronger prescriptions.
They make your glasses more attractive. Polycarbonate lenses
belong to this category. Ultraviolet radiation is absorbed.
Photochromatic - These are the lenses that darken when they are exposed to sunlight. They are available in plastic as well as glass material. They provide a convenience that many people enjoy.
Conventional Plastic - Hard resin lenses are about half the weight of glass lenses and they are more impact resistant than glass.
Glass - Glass lenses have been available for many years. They are the most scratch resistant material and have very good optics. The disadvantages of glass lenses lies in their weight and safety. Although glass lenses are treated by heat or chemical to be more impact resistant, they are the least safest lenses available.
Lens Design
Single Vision Lenses - Single vision lenses have only one focal point. These lenses are for people who have normal focusing ability. They can also be used for special purposes requiring good vision at a specific distance.
Progressive Power Lenses - Progressive power lenses are a type of multifocal lens (bifocal / trifocal) in which there is continuous clear vision at almost all distances....distance, intermediate and near. These are the the "bifocals" without the line. They are excellent lenses, especially for those of you who have never used a multifocal lens before. These are lens of choice for people who are wearing conventional bifocals or trifocals.
Flat Top Bifocal - These lenses provide two different focal points...one for distance and the other for near.
Flat Top Trifocal - As you lose more of your ability to focus your eyes for close up ( It is an aging thing....Sorry!) , even items to bee seen at arms length can become fuzzy. The middle portion of the trifocal lens is designed for that distance. ( Progressive power lenses are an excellent alternative to trifocals.)
Special Lenses - Special lenses can be designed to take care of your visual needs for using the computer, playing sports, or other occupational and avocational tasks.
Lens Treatments
Anti-reflective Coatings - Excellent anti-reflective coatings are available to decrease the annoying reflections. These help reduce fatigue, improve visual acuity and improve the over all appearance of the glasses.
Scratch Resistant Coatings - Lenses made out of anything other than glass tend to be more easily scratched. These coatings help protect the lenses from normal scratching. Having your lenses coated with this type of treatment is a very cost effective investment. There is no lens that will resist scratches from abuse or misuse!
Ultraviolet Protection - These coatings protect against the harmful UV rays of the sun. Because of the intrinsic properties of polycarbonate and other high index material, UV protection is not required, however, you should consider UV protection on conventional plastic lenses.
